Pilot Job Outlook Remains Strong Despite Pandemic

Boeing, the world’s largest aerospace company, recently released a re-forecast of future pilot job outlook from 2020 to 2039. Despite the decrease in air travel and manufacturing during the past few months as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Boeing projects positive, robust 3-year demand for commercial pilots.

The current pandemic has produced a temporary over-supply of experienced pilots. However, researchers analyzed the issuance of new pilot licenses over the past several years, reviewed recent trends in early pilot retirements, and forecasted the expected uptick in passenger air travel once the pandemic has subsided, and they predict demand for pilots will return to pre-pandemic levels in roughly three years.

Additionally, over the next two to three years, additional pilots will exit as they reach retirement age and new pilots will need to be available to take their place.

Steve Dickson, Administrator at the Federal Aviation Administration remains optimistic in speaking to students training to become new pilots: “Be ready. There is a generational shift as aviators and others do not want to work past the current cycle, and that will create opportunities.”
